Computer and Internet Use Policy

Using Information Technology at GCC - information regarding "appropriate computing behavior" and "users' rights and responsibilities" for faculty and staff.

Public workstations in the library are to be used for research purposes only. At busy times, it may be necessary to limit the length of time patrons may use the library computers to 20 minutes.

Wireless Access

Wireless connection is available through various hotspots on campus, including the library. At this time, no technical support or service is available. Students must configure their own computer to access wireless on campus.

Email Stations

Students may access their email accounts at four computers at the very top of the stairs leading to the fourth floor. These stations are located against the wall on the right hand side. Email cannot be accessed on the other computers. Using the print server and copy card, students are able to print emails from the workstations on the second floor. There is a 20 minute limit when there is a line.

Printing

  • To retrieve print jobs, copy cards must be purchased from a vending machine in the library’s copy room (LB 301). The library does not have a cash or credit card payment function for printers.
  • There are two printers;
    • one located just in front of the Women’s Resource Center where the computer stations/carrels are located,
    • and another, or the backup is located in the microfilm room (LB 302).
  • Items will cue to both computers and will be deleted within two hours if the document is not retrieved.

TIPS:

  • When printing a Word, PowerPoint, or Excel document from WebCT, the document must be saved on the desktop before it can be printed properly. Note: printing within WebCT might produce blank pages or pages with only browser frames and nothing else. PDF documents may be printed (without having to save it on the desktop) from WebCT by clicking on the print icon within the PDF reader/viewer.
  • PowerPoint presentations can only printed individually (1 per page) as slides. Printing multiple slides on one page (handout format) is not possible.
  • Documents saved in WORKS program will not be able to be printed as is. Request assistance from a librarian who can save the .wps document in WORD format at one of the reference desk computers and print the WORD document out from the computer stations.
  • Students wanting color copies of class or research-related printouts may request so at the reference desk. Currently, we do not charge for these printouts.

Copy Machines/Copiers

There are 6 copy machines and 1 color copier in the first room on the left upon entering the library (LB 301). Students may pay with cash or card.

  • Card copies are 9 cents a page for black and white
  • Cash payment copies are 10 cents a page for black and white
  • The color copier will only accept quarters (75 cents/page) for payment

Flash Drives

Students may use flash drives (thumb drives) to store or download information.

The Library has one head-set designated for our disabled user workstation. For students who need head-sets to listen to sound clips on WebCT for music, the Music Lab in AU 210 has at least three workstations where students may use headphones and access WebCT sound clips. For language classes, students can use English Lab in AD 238. The Language Lab, does not have web access.
